Nutrition In Our Community
Our school is in a busy area. All around the neighborhood walking distance from SCSE, we have several restaurant and markets. Using your knowledge on nutrition, you need to make the right choices when going to eat. Although the food at many of these places is delicious, you have to think if it is healthy. Fried foods, foods high in fat and sugar, and foods that are served in massive quantities, can be the downfall of any persons attempts at eating a healthy diet. Aside from the many restaurants in the area, we also have a few mini marts and gas stations with convenience stores such as the convenience stores on Broad St. at the corner across from Schuyler Avenue. You will see healthy items, but the majority of food choices at convenience stores are unhealthy. What's worse, is these types stores generally promote the sale of unhealthy foods more than healthy. Every time you go to pay, right there at the register most of the time is candy and chips. All of this is junk food and by putting it at the cash register, is the businesses way of trying to get you to buy these small items. According to the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota, In terms of food placement, 77 percent of stores featured at least one healthful item positioned as an easy-to-reach, last-minute “impulse buy,” and 98 percent of stores had at least one unhealthy item placed for purchase at checkout.
